 The ACAS annual report, which has just been published, shows the number of unfair dismissal cases has increased by nearly one third from 33,352 in 2007/8 to 43,028 in 2008/9.

The number of claims for breach of contract and redundancy pay are also up substantially over previous years as are claims for sex, race and disability discrimination.

The overall number of claims actually fell last year but this was due to a lower number of equal pay claims being brought against local authorities.  The number of cases being brought against  small and medium sized employers continues to rise.

With a large number of redundancies being declared, this figure is expected to increase during 2009/10.
