One in Eight Sick Notes Is Fake
The CBI claims that one in eight days taken by British workers is fake. Most are taken on a Monday or Friday as staff give themselves an unofficial long weekend. There is also anecdotal evidence of employees taking holidays to coincide with big sporting events.
This, of course, is nothing new. Indeed, our phone lines are often red hot on a Monday morning with employers seeking advice on how to deal with absent employees.
There are calculated to be 21m “suspect sickies” from employees every year at a total cost to the economy of £1.6 billion. |
