The Government is proposing a change to legislation which will allow mothers to transfer all or part of the second 26 weeks of their maternity leave to the father of their child.

At present, pregnant women are entitled to a maximum period of 52 weeks maternity leave, of which 39 form part of their maternity pay period.  The Government is proposing that all or part of the second 26 weeks would be transferable to the father.  Any outstanding weeks that are not paid would also be transferable to the father.  This is in addition to existing paternity rights which fathers may already qualify for.
