It is estimated that approximately 1.3 million workers in the UK will benefit form an increase in the National Minimum Wage which takes effect from October 2007.

The existing rate and new rate are given below.

Age	Rate until 30/09/07	Rate from 01/10/07
16-17	£3.30	£3.40
18-21	£4.45	£4.60
21+	£5.35	£5.52

While the increases will benefit workers, some employers remain concerned that the increases could damage both businesses and employment prospects. Furthermore, the new rates remain below the rate of £6.00 per hour, for adult workers, which is being advocated by some unions.
