The government has recently announced that employers who fail to pay workers the national minimum wage will face new financial penalties.

The new penalties of up to £200 per worker will apply regardless of the unfair payment.
 
Research from the DTI shows that more than 1500 businesses were found to be breaking the rules.  The breach of the regulations is believed to cover more than 25,000 employees.

The current rates of national minimum wage are:

16 -17 year old = £3.30 per hour
18-21 year old  = £4.45 per hour
21+   = £5.35 per hour
