The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Alistair Darling, has announced that the maximum weekly pay for redundancy purposes will be increased from £350 to £380.  At the time of writing it is not clear when this change will take effect or whether the change will also impact on the basic award for unfair dismissal.

The measure is designed both to give employees increased compensation when losing their jobs on grounds of redundancy, but may also act as a disincentive to employers from making redundancies unless absolutely necessary
