The Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills has issued a consultation paper proposing a new right to request time off for training.

This would be the first time under UK law that employees would have a legal right to request, and be given, time off during working hours to undertake training.  The proposed new law will resemble the current right to request flexible working which puts an onus on an employer to consider any request seriously. The proposal does not require employers pay for training, but most employers would be expected to do so
